You wonder why drugs cost so much??
From a recent article in Nature Medicine: Pharma spends big to buy influence
Despite the slumping economy, the US pharmaceutical and health products industry spent a whopping $267 million in 2009 on lobbying efforts—more in one year than any other single industry ever. Steven Findlay, a health policy analyst for Consumers Union in Washington, DC, says that most of this extra expenditure—12% more than the previous year—stemmed from the beleaguered health care reform bill.
This kind of abuse is intolerable. Drugs are not developed to help patients as the first motivation. They are developed with profit as the driving force. The amount spent on lobbying is only the most obvious abuse. Can you even imagine how far that amount would go to actually develop a cure for even just one disease! Not that they want to cure diseases - heaven forbid - diet and exercise can cure diabetes but that would never do - loads have been spent making sure none of that research gets done and what is never sees the light of day!
